hmmmm.....yesterday was one of the best days I have had in awhile. I slept until 11am or so. When I got up, I took shower and when I came out, my Mom had fixed a buffet style sandwich line for those of us staying at the house. After eating lunch, the group decided to go see "The Italian Job" - a good movie and for the matinee price of $4. We leave Lewisville to head by the ballpark on the way to Midpointe (Restoration's Saturday night worship) - I have time to get my traditional Jumbo Jack and be at the church with 3 minutes to spare. Awesome. Once again, worship is great and the pastor gives good words - I really enjoy this church. I talk a couple of minutes to folks and help clean up a little and we're out of there by 7:45. We are going to be about an hour late to the game but that's alright, I don't mind. But guess what - can you say rain delay? We walk into the ballpark as they are singing the National Anthem - the seats are pretty good and a foul ball is hit to our section by the second batter.
Now let me pause for a moment in the story to tell you about this foul ball. I am seated along the right field line about two or three seats from the foul pole. Mr. Henry is seated directly to my left followed by four empty seats for people in our group who hadn't arrived yet. On the other side of these four seats, a man and his wife are seated. A screaming line drive foul is hit and curves back and at this couple. This guy casually stands up with a cup of coke in his left hand and bare fisted catches the line drive with his right hand like he was a catcher catching a pitcher. It was on of the best things ever - he shook it off like it was nothing - greatness.
moving on....the game wasn't too exciting as the Rangers lost 2-0. We left in the botton of the sixth after the dot race (I won a coupon for a bottle of water if I bought a bottle of water - how lame is that?). Of course, it was interesting to note that Jerry Seinfeld was in the crowd at this particular game....anyway.....We got to Denton at about 11pm or so and headed straight to Rubber Gloves. We missed "The Alexander" but were there in time to hear "The Theater Fire" tuning up and all that.
"The Theater Fire"
Hard to describe. Hard to describe. This is a seven piece band. 3 members play about 4 different instruments each. I'll list them following:
member a - piano
member b - bass guitar
member c - drums
member d - electric guitar ( which he plays at times with "egg stick" - a shaker egg duct taped to a drumstick)
member e - acoustic guitar, eletric guitar, mandolin, and accordian
member f - harmonicas, washboard, trumpet (oh, and he rolls his own cigarettes while the band performs)
member g - lap steel, banjo, xylophone, tambourine (with his feet), and chimes
member's d and e take turns with lead vocals. The whole feel is almost country, almost not. Very cool no matter what you call it. So they played and we enjoyed it. "Ester Drang" sets up next.
Now, I like "Ester Drang" and all but I was a little disappointed since "Explosions in the Sky" wasn't there like I had heard a week earlier. But anyway, these guys sounded really good and got a lot louder than I thought they would or could. I was impressed and think that they are better than I have previously given them credit for. Not to mention that the lead singer refused a request for a song because it brought up a lot of crap he didn't want to deal with again. That's honesty for ya.
To top of the evening, we come home at about 1:30am or so and catch an interview with Johny Cash on Larry King Live. It was a good Saturday- yes it was.
