The Squirrel War Rages On
I don't really know if squirrels are territorial or not. Maybe they're playing some mating game I am unaware of. But here is how it goes.
I come out every morning when I wake up to log on to the program I use for work and download all the files from the previous evening and the current morning using the broadband we pay for. I do this because it gives me a chance to wake up a bit and also because it is much faster than the verizon card I use once I am in the truck. In fact, I am sitting on the back porch right now.
From time to time, nearly every day really, squirrels bound around in the hundred year old trees on the other side of the fence. Usually there are only one or two of the little buggers and occassionaly they jump down in the yard and dig a little even though I'm sitting only a few feet away.
Today, however, there are four in the trees that I can see and hear. Two teams of two and one of the teams is on the run. They are being chased around with much clucking (the best I can describe it) by the other team. I have never seen four at one time. Every now and then I'll see one being chased by the other two. It would seem that this area is prime squirrel real estate as well as human real estate. Too bad I can't go chasing the humans off that I don't like with loud clucking. That would be a sight to see. Ooh, they just set up an ambush after running off the other two. Squirrels are quite entertaining as I'm learning each day I sit out here.
By the by, I have also seen two raccoons and a possum late night out here. I don't know how the squirrels feel about this and I'll have to tell them about what I've witnessed and see what they think. I would much rather have squirrels around than raccoons and possums. You would almost think I wasn't downtown and out in the woods somewhere by some of the action that takes place back here. It's nice.
And so the great Rage continues in '06.
